CNSC codirector Mireia Fernández-Ardèvol delivered a public talk last Monday, October 28 at the #LunchAndLearn seminars the Concordia Centre for Research on Aging (engAGE) organizes periodically. In this talk, titled “Crossing boundaries: Getting muddy in interdisciplinary research on ageing“, Mireia reflects on the merits and challenges that interdisciplinary collaborations offer when conducting research on ageing and older people.
Description: In the study of age and ageing, interdisciplinary collaboration can have myriad benefits. The practice of interdisciplinary research is also fraught with challenges. Using examples from her research on mobile digital practices among older adults in both developed and developing countries, Mireia Fernández-Ardèvol explores strategies for engaging in research that bridge multiple disciplines and approaches. Drawing on her experiences and training in both economics and sociology, she explores opportunities for using both qualitative and quantitative approaches while avoiding patronizing attitudes and narrow conceptualizations of age and ageing.
